Lifting Up Iraqi Women’s Voices

Women In Islam, Inc founder Aisha Al-Adawiya recently attended a conference of WAFDI, Women’s Alliance for a Democratic Iraq.  WAFDI is comprised of Iraqi women living in Iraq as well as abroad, including many women leaders in Iraq’s new parliament.  WAFDI believes that women are a fundamental component for sustainable peace and democracy in the new Iraq and continually advocates for full and equal rights for women in civil society.  WAFDI’s vision of equality is grounded in the values of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, among other human rights statutes, and as such, WAFDI is committed to the advancement and empowerment of women in all areas of society.

Held in NYC, the conference focused on women’s rights and leadership in Iraq.  Samir Sumaida’ie, Iraqi Ambassador to the US delivered the keynote.
