A year ago, February 12, Sr. Aasiya Zubair was brutally murdered by her husband. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’oon– Truly every life, everything material, comes from Allah, the Most High, and to Him is our return. Her death, as it was publicized through the media, brought the global Muslim community face to face with domestic violence in our midst. Many women suffer this crime in silence; social and cultural taboos normalize domestic violence. The Islamic approach, however, is zero tolerance.
Women In Islam, Inc. commends the work of Turning Point for Women and Families and other organizations and leaders who work tirelessly on behalf of women, and remind them that there is a life-after abuse- women can transform their lives and live empowered–women are survivors. Thanks also to Wajahat Ali, for his article in her memory in The Guardian and for sharing news about community developments and the website of Muslim Men Against Domestic Violence. Insha Allah, God willing, we will stand firm and stamp out DV from our midst.
